Types of Rats in the Pacific Northwest
Rats
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we primarily see two different kinds of rats. The first is black rats, which are also referred to as roof rats. You’ll often find them in trees, on telephone wires, and, unfortunately, in your attic.
The other type of rat common to this area is the Norway rat, also called a brown rat. It is large and either brown or grey in color. These stay lower to the ground and are commonly found digging through garbage or infesting dark spaces — like crawl spaces.
Signs of Rats in Your Home or Business
Rats are generally looking for a place that is safe and warm from outdoor elements, and offers consistent food nearby. Though almost completely blind, rats are somewhat-intelligent animals that will find any and all ways to infiltrate your property through tiny holes, loose plumbing connections, and gaps in your roofing.
Some of the common signs that you have rats in your home or business include:
- Rat droppings
- Scratching noises
- Rat footprints
- Rub marks along baseboards
- Damage to wood, insulation, and furnishings
- Rat nests
- Burrows under garages, decking, or sheds
Rat Control: Rat Removal Techniques & Strategies
If you have rats, you probably want them removed and fast. We remove the animals through bait stations and trapping. Bait stations are placed on the exterior of your property with a chemical that acts as a lethal blood thinner for rats.
Often used in combination with bait stations, we also offer a variety of rat traps. A snap trap is a traditional, but ever-effective method of trapping rats inside a home or business. An alternative is a hydro-trip, which uses compressed air and can kill multiple rats at once.
Rat Control: Rat Exclusion Techniques & Strategies
Exclusion, or techniques for keeping pests out once they’ve been initially removed, is a critical part of the process. Rat exclusion often involves filling any existing burrow holes with cement, a galvanized screen and mesh, or a steel wool product called an excluder. In addition to burrow holes, we look for and seal other access points such as ripped screens and broken or missing doors.
