Carpenter Ants are known for making their nests in wood, whether that be a damp log in the woods, or the walls of your basement. Since there are two different kinds of Carpenter Ants in this area, you may come across a colony that is reddish-brown in color, or they could be all black with tiny yellow hairs on their body. These ants are brown or black in color, and mostly are 1/16 of an inch in length. Pavement Ants
Pavement Ant colonies have many queens, and can grow to contain 30,000 members in a single colony. On average, Pavement Ants are between 1/16 and 1/8 of an inch long and can be light brown to reddish brown in color. As their name suggests, they do make their nests under pavement, however they also will reside under stones, in soil, or rotting wood. You can tell that they’ve made your home their home by the piles of sand in your driveway, patio, or basement. Thatching Ants
Many species of Thatching Ants occur in the Pacific Northwest; some of them are red and black in color, others completely brown or completely black. A good way to tell if you have a Thatching Ant infestation is by the notch in the thorax, or middle section, of the ant’s body. Velvety Tree Ants
Velvety Tree Ants will either be dark red with a black head, or ranging in color from dark brown to black all over. At first glance you might think these are carpenter ants, but if you look closely you’ll see they have a fuzzy look to them, due to the short hairs covering their bodies. These ants are attracted to areas with high levels of moisture, and access to food. They most likely will make their nest inside the walls of your home or even in your insulation. Flying Ants
When it is time to expand the nest, most ants will send out winged reproductives, as do termites. They can look similar to the untrained eye. While many different species of ants produce Flying Ants, they all have the same basic features to tell them apart from termites. Ants have two larger wings and two smaller wings while termites have 4 wings that are roughly the same size. Ants also have a “waist” that separates the front of their bodies from the back, unlike termites whose bodies are one smooth segment all the way down. Also, depending on the species, Flying Ants are only produced in either the Spring or Fall for mating purposes. Boxelder Bugs

Ladybugs
